Information about Canadians with offshore accounts
Canada has just signed an agreement with Switzerland that would free more financial records after years of applying pressure to provide information about Canadian s with offshore accounts who may be tax evaders.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced changes to the existing double-taxation agreement on October 22, 2010 during a visit to Switzerland.
The new rules will help with the exchange of information on Canadian citizens who might be suspected of hiding offshore assets or taxable income in Switzerland.
A voluntary disclosure can still be made before CRA contacts the Swiss bank account holders.
